Cars

BGMsport owns and operates an eclectic mix of rally cars, including:

LOTUS CORTINA MK1 RALLY CAR (REGISTRATION: PRP 74D)
BGMsport purchased this car in 2008 and carried out a thorough restoration to full FIA Appendix K regulations.

Imported into the UK from California and first registered in the UK in 1990, it was driven on the historic section of the RAC Rally by Roger Clark who finished seventh overall in 1991 and third in 1992. The car also won its class in the British Historic Rally Championship in 1998 and 1999.

Outright success was also achieved in the Pirelli Classic Marathon, West Cork, Coronation and Scottish rallies, with class wins secured on the Targa Rusticana and 1000 Lakes veteran events. In March 2010 it was used on the Costa Brava regularity event.

FORD ESCORT MK1 RALLY CAR
This car has been the property of BGMsport since 2007 and was the first RS1600 built from scratch at Ford’s now defunct motorsport base at Boreham in Essex.

Emblazoned in Daily Express livery, it was driven on the 1970 RAC Rally and on several occasions in 1971 by Roger Clark, with Timo Makinen also using the car in 1971 on the Hanki Rally.

Since its purchase by BGMsport, the car has been fully restored – including returning it to its 1970 Daily Express livery – to FIA historic regulations.

Following its restoration the car was used by Travis Pastrana on the Colin McRae Forest Stages in September 2008. The American claimed a top-20 finish, quite an achievement for a 38-year-old car and testimony to Pastrana’s talents and the work of the BGMsport technicians.

FORD ESCORT MK2 RALLY CAR (REGISTRATION: GLN 28T)

Part of the BGMsport stable since 2009, the car has been transformed to modern specification complete with a paddleshift gear change mechanism.

It was driven to class victory and seventh in the two-wheel drive section of the Colin McRae Forest Stages in September 2009.

The car is currently awaiting a new body shell but once this work has been completed it will be used by Calum Macleod on selected rallies.

SKODA OCTAVIA WRC EVO 3 (REGISTRATION: KT51 CEJ)

BGMsport acquired this car in 2006 and completed a part renovation ahead of Ian Gwynne’s run to second overall on the Bill Gwynne Motorsport/Rallyschool Stages at Sweet Lamb that year.

Since then it has seen action at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2008 when Ian Gwynne and Mark Higgins both used it on the Forest Rally Stage.

Now available for corporate events and shows, the car will be best remembered for the fifth place it achieved on Rally Argentina in 2002 in the hands of Toni Gardemeister, the Octavia’s best result at WRC level. Gardemeister also used it on the world championship rallies in Great Britain, Italy and Turkey in 2003.

SUBARU IMPREZA S7 WRC (REGISTRATION: S7 SRT)

Subaru Impreza

Built by Prodrive and given to Richard Burns as a gift for winning the World Rally Championship in 2001, the car was purchased by BGMsport in 2006.

It uses an S6 body shell but has S7 and S8 running gear and was part of the Prodrive parade at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2009.

Burns never drove this car competitively and it has only been used by BGMsport for shows and corporate events.

FORD FOCUS WRC (REGISTRATION: Y5 FMC)

Colin McRae was the only driver to use this car in competition. It managed three rallies – Sanremo in 2001 and Monte Carlo and Corsica in 2002. It was during the island-based rally that McRae was injured in a heavy crash. The car was never used again but has since been restored to its original condition and livery.

SUBARU IMPREZA GPN (REGISTRATION: P186 JJO)

An original Prodrive-built car, it was rallied extensively in China before being sold by Prodrive to Nicky Moore in 1997. Moore retained BGMsport to run the car, with BGM finally purchasing the car in 2004. It is now used by BGMsport for driver training purposes although it is available to hire for competitive events.

VAUXHALL CHEVETTE HSR RALLY CAR (REGISTRATION: FER 687W)
Acquired by BGMsport in 2009, this is an original factory-built car and still in period condition, albeit in the process of being restored by BGMsport. Previous drivers include Jimmy McRae and Austin MacHale, who rallied it predominantly in Ireland.

FORD RS200 RALLY CAR (REGISTRATION: B200 AYD)

The Ford RS200 is probably one of the greatest Group B cars, never to quite realise it true potential.  On paper, it was a world beater, but sadly let down by a variety of problems. It was destined to become part of the Goup ‘B’ swan song.

BGMsport purchased this car in October 2008 for Steve Rimmer and have completed a full restoration, taking great care to keep the car as original as possible.
In period Stig Blomqvist drove the car on the Acropolis and RAC rallies of 1986. He ran in the top four on both occasions but twice failed to make the finish due to mechanical failures.

Blomqvist was reunited with the car when he performed demonstration runs at the Autosport International Show, while Malcolm Wilson drove it at the Coy’s Historic Rallysprint event at Silverstone.

NISSAN SUNNY GTI NME RALLY CAR
An original works machine, it was used by four-time world champion Tommi Makinen to win the Formula 2 section of the Scottish Rally in 1994. It has since been fully restored by BGMsport.

SUBARU LEGACY GROUP A RALLY CAR

This was the car driven by Colin McRae in which he finished 2nd in Sweden in 1992.
The Car was purchased by BGMsport in 2009 and fully refurbished to it original 1992 livery.
The car is also used in support of the Colin McRae Vision Charity at different venues around the country, and has been driven by Jimmy McRae at Race Retro and the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2010 and 2011.
The support vehicle is also the original Mercedes Truck used by Prodrive when they ran the car for Colin.  The truck has also been refurbished by BGMsport and is exactly the same as it would have been in 1992.

Talbot Sunbeam Lotus Rally Car - KKV 444V

KKV 444V is the original Talbot Sunbeam Lotus that Henri Toivonen & Paul White used to win the 1980 Lombard RAC Rally.
The Talbot Sunbeam Lotus Group 2 rally car was a car that marked the end of 8 years of Ford Escort supremacy.  The 1980 win by Henri Toivonen and vastly experienced and highly respected co-driver Paul White was a truly historic victory because of this and showed what a huge talent Henri was.
Henri Toivonen from Finland was only 24 years old and was the youngest person ever to win a world championship event. Henri had beaten severe competition from the likes of Bjorn Waldegard, Ari Vatanen and Englishman Tony Pond. He even beat his fellow country man and rally hero Hannu Mikkola who was hoping for a hat trick of victories. This victory was a spring board for Henri’s career, and he went off to drive for Opel, Porsche and Lancia, all this during the dramatic and exciting years of the Group B Supercars.
A tragic accident sadly cut short this hugely gifted rally drivers career in 1986, Henri was leading the Tour de Course rally in his Group B Lancia Delta S4 which left the road and sadly both crew lost their lives.
This accident contributed to the FIA’s decision to ban the Group B cars. The Talbot Sunbeam Lotus was the last 2 wheel drive car to win the RAC Rally, which makes KKV 444V the “most famous” Talbot Sunbeam Lotus rally car.
Time line:
In 1985 the car came to the UK after being sold to Spain and driven there by Zanini before being purchased by Ignacio Sunsundegui and returned to England.
In 2008, KKV 444V was put up for sale via Mark Donaldson of Morris and Welford , and it was purchased by Alan Fleming who took the car across to Northern Ireland. Mark now runs his own business, Mark Donaldson Ltd ( www.markdonaldson.com )and he and BGMsport have built up a very happy business and personal relationship, working together on many varying projects.
In December 2009 the car was purchased by BGMsport on behalf of Steve Rimmer and came back to BGMsport to become part of Steve’s private collection of historic cars that BGMsport store and maintain.
There is a replica of this car in the British Museum of Cars in Coventry.  This car carries the same number plate as the original and permission was granted for this in 1993 by the then owner of KKV 444V.
