Ian Gwynne Said
“Jimmy has driven with us at various events over the last 10 years and it is fabulous to have both Alister and Jimmy together at Race Retro”.
“Race Retro is not only our local historic motor show but also over the last few years I believe the live rally stage has offered fans a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the best drivers and the best rally cars of historical interest, being able to see them driven in anger on a stage that is fun to watch and easy to access.”
“This year I have invited one of my close friends and customers Steve Rimmer, to travel over from his home in the USA to come and experience this event himself ”.
Steve is an ex rally driver from many years ago and now owns one of the UKs best rally car collections. Steve also runs and owns Dirtfish based near Seattle, USA. He will be taking the opportunity to drive one of his best known rally cars KKV 444V, the original Talbot Sunbeam Lotus that Henri Toivonen won the 1980 Lombard RAC Rally.
Below is more info on the line up of BGMsport’s cars and driver.
KKV 444V is the original Talbot Sunbeam Lotus that Henri Toivonen & Paul White used to win the 1980 Lombard RAC Rally. The Talbot Sunbeam Lotus Group 2 rally car was a car that marked the end of 8 years of Ford Escort supremacy and the last rear wheel drive car to win the rally, the car has been part of the Rimmer collection for several years and is only used now on demonstration events This car has been invited to many events such as Goodwood FOS and has graced the floor at the RAC club in London. Because of its originality, it always pulls a good crowd whenever it is on show.
Ford RS1700T. This monster prototype RWD car was designed by Ford Motor Company and built at Boreham in the early 80’S to compete in Group B rallying. It is believed that only 18 were built and of those only 5 EXIST TODAY, one being owned by Malcolm Wilson. This car has been undergoing a long term restoration here in the BGMsport workshop and it is absolutely fabulous that we are able to get this car out onto the rally stage and demonstrate it. This car became part of the Rimmer collection in 2012. The car came to BGMsport in bits and it has now been fully rebuilt.
Vauxhall Chevette HSR - FER 687W – owned by Steve Rimmer
Originally built for Jimmy McRae who drove the car on various British Championship events in 1980, winning Cork 20. When BGMsport found the car it had been stored for many years in Southern Ireland. The car was fully restored by BGMsport in 2013/14. In 2015 it was reunited with Jimmy McRae at Race Retro where he drove the car again, Jimmy said it was like “wearing a glove”.
Nissan NME Micra Kit Car – Our very own pocket rocket.
This little car is one of a kind, the only Nissan built kit car. This car was driven by Mark Higgins in Finland 1000 lakes 1997 and Geoff Jones on the British Rally championship. Owned by Ian Gwynne.
Markku Alen Ex-works - Fiat 131 Abarth Grp 4 Rally Car
Rebuilt in Alitalia livery (1977) The car is believed to be the only one in existence of the two cars specially built with tall front and rear turrets for the rougher WRC events. Purchased some years ago, another car that has gone through a full restoration in the BGMsport workshop. Last year the car was not quite ready for the rally stage at Race Retro so was invited to be on display in the halls. It is great that this year it will be out on the rally stage.
BMW M3 GpA Rally Car
Totally original Prodrive built factory spec car. Prodrive ran this car for a customer, Frederic Dor, in the late 80’s. The car has been kept totally original and was only ever looked after by Prodrive. Ari Vatanen also drove the car at Race Retro 2017.
Subaru Legacy Group A.
This was the car driven by Colin McRae in which he finished 2nd in Sweden in 1992. BGMsport owned the car in the mid 90’s and Ian competed on National championship events and the Silverstone Rallysprint series, in which he won many events. The car was then sold and lived in Europe until Ian tracked the car down. It was then purchased by BGMsport in 2008 and fully refurbished to its original 1992 livery. The car has also been used in support of the Colin McRae Vision Charity at different venues around the country, and has been driven by Jimmy, Alister , Ari Vatanen, Mark Higgins, Markko Märtin, and David Llewellin. It became part of Steve’s collection in 2012.
